View your diagnostic images in the exam room!
MRI images viewable in exam rooms or the doctor’s office. HTS has worked with two local Radiology groups to enable a busy Orthopedic Surgeon to review PACS images in the exam room and his office. These multiple images can be made to view one slide at a time or move faster as a video. The transcribed report from the Radiologist can be viewed at any time. You can even listen to the original dictation file used to transcribe the report.

5 Questions you can ask yourself today:

  1. Does each of your “business associates” have a signed Business Associate Agreement on file at your practice?
  2. Do each of your computers and software products have passwords and are these passwords secured at your practice?
  3. Does every computer shut-down automatically during non-use?
  4. Does your practice backup data daily and rotate the data off-site?
  5. Do you connect to your system securely from home?

Technology Jargon

Backup — the process of copying data, preferably on a day-to-day basis, from your computer system onto tapes for the purpose of disaster recovery.
Fault Tolerance – the ability of a server to sustain a component failure (such as a hard drive or power supply) and still continue to operate.
Remote Access — the ability for a user to connect into your system from home, hotels or other service locations.
Tablet PC — a portable computer slightly larger than the screen on a laptop. These devices are pen-based and allow you to touch directly on the screen to input and retrieve data. Especially useful with wireless networks, Tablet PCs can work wonders in an office or hospital environment.

Acronym Alley

PACS – Picture Archive and Communication System A teleradiology system that allows for the collection, analyzing, and communication of diagnostic image modalities. These images, in compliant formats such as DICOM, can be sent securely between departments, facilities, or even across country. When coupled with a Computed Radiology (CR) system, patients are even exposed to lower radiation doses for better image quality and the office is spared chemical processing risks and costs. PACS and CR are one of the fastest growing areas of computing in medicine.

DICOM – Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine A standard developed by ACR-NEMA (American college of Radiology-National Electrical Manufacturers Association) for communications between medical imaging devices. It conforms to the ISO reference model for network communications and incorporates object-oriented design concepts. DICOM specifies protocols and formats for the exchange of images, time-based waveforms, reports, and associated information for medical applications.
